NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM

The Livingstone Museum is themed the Natural History Museum. The Livingstone Museum is the largest and oldest museum in the country established in 1934. The history of the museum dates as far back as 1930s during the colonial era. During the early 1930s, the then secretary for native affairs started collecting materials of significant importance. His idea was to collect cultural materials of the tribes of Northern Rhodesia (Zambia now) and kept these materials in his office.
Today, the museum has two major research wings namely Humanities and Natural History. Under Humanities there are 3 major sections which are Archaeology, Ethnography and History. The 3 sections are headed by keepers.

The keepers are responsible for research, documentation of collections, exhibitions and curation of collections under their custody. As already alluded to earlier, the Archaeology and Ethnography sections have a lot of collections which are representative of the country. The History collection also has artefacts that are of great value to the country. One of the most valuable collections is the memorabilia of David Livingstone some of which are displayed in the galleries.
The Natural History Department is divided into 6 sections namely Botany, Entomology, Herpetology, Ichthyology, Mammalogy and Ornithology. The Mammology and Ornithology sections constitute the major collection of specimens under the department. The botany and Ichthyology sections are relatively new sections of the department. The 5 permanent exhibition galleries at Livingstone Museum are: Archaeology, ethnography, Natural History, History and David Livingstone. The Museum usually mounts several temporary exhibitions throughout the year. Occasionally the museum organises travelling exhibitions which are meant to take the museum to the community. The museum has an Education Department which acts as a link between the museum and the community.
